Discussion Topic: Pipeline Protests – Will the Hereditary Chiefs Get What They Want?

Moderator: John Pope

On Sunday, a tentative agreement was reached between the Wet’suwet’en Hereditary Chiefs and the federal government:

This agreement is the opening round of a continuing dialog between the two sides.  The Hereditary Chiefs are still opposed to the pipeline, and the protests continue.

For our discussion, I strongly suggest that participants at this Cafe watch the news for articles on this topic which is changing hourly.

Will the government use force to remove the blockades if the Chiefs continue to refuse to allow the pipeline to be built?  What will be the response if they do?

What has happened to ‘Reconciliation’?

Is inconveniencing thousands of Canadians from coast to coast a good tactic to get attention or support?  Why or why not?

Could these protests have been avoided if the government had resolved issues earlier over treaty rights documents signed in 1984 and 1997?
