Discussion Topic:
SEPARATION OF CHURCH AND STATE: Prime Minister Trudeau, build up this wall!
Discussion Leader: Rob Light
Many Canadians think of their country as a secular state with a firm wall separating the church and the various levels of government. Yet if you study the Constitution, the Charter of Rights and Freedoms, the Criminal Code, and tax regulations you read a very different story. The wall is thin and has more than few loopholes in it.
What can we do as humanists in a democracy to better secure the place and space between church and state? What groups are working on it in Canada? What have other countries done to preserve the peace between the two large and ancient institutions? What about a Constitutional Amendment for Canada? How could we attain it and how would it work?
Please come this Wednesday at 7 pm in the New Horizons building for another Humanist Cafe. Our President Rob Light will be leading the Cafe discussion as our regular host-with-the-most John Pope will be out of town.
See you there! Bring a buddy.
Open to all! Coffee and tea provided.
